Fulbright US Scholar Program
Program Description
AMINEF administers the Fulbright US Scholar Program in Indonesia, allowing annually ten American senior scholars to either teach for one semester (six months) in an Indonesian university or to conduct research for up to ten months. While in some countries Fulbright US Scholars can both teach and do research, in Indonesia, due to Immigration and Ministry of Manpower regulations, they may not do both simultaneously, and thus applicants must choose one or the other program.
Academics at all career levels and appropriately qualified professionals outside of academia, including those in early career, may apply for this program. A PhD or other terminal degree is expected.
Applications are sought from all disciplines, with preference for those in the social sciences, humanities, and arts category on: anthropology, art and art history, communications, economics, education, film, journalism, literature, music, political science, religion, sociology, Southeast Asian studies, and theater. For applications in the STEM fields, the following disciplines are particularly welcome: agriculture, biology, chemistry, climatology, computer science, engineering, environmental sciences, geology, mathematics, oceanography, physics, and public health.
Eligibility Requirements
The applicant should:
- Be a US citizen
- Hold a PhD or other terminal degree
- Have three years' teaching experience (for teaching awards) and a record of scholarly publications
Invitation letters from a host institution are not required, but advance communication with a host institution is highly recommended. AMINEF reserves the right to finalize all affiliations based on the best match between the expertise of selected scholars and the needs of participating institutions.
How to Apply?
AMINEF does not accept applications for the Fulbright US Scholar Program directly. Applicants must apply online through the website of the Council for International Exchange of Scholars' (CIES) Fulbright US Scholar Program and click on "Apply."

Questions about application procedure and program deadline should be directed to the CIES Regional Lead, Ms. Sophia Yang, at eastasiapacific@iie.org.
Before deciding to apply for the US Scholar program, applicants are strongly encouraged to check the section entitled Information to consider before accepting a Fulbright Grant to Indonesia.
Grant Benefits
Grantees will receive a $2,200 per month stipend, $1,400-$1,800 per month housing allowance, and local transportation allowance ($500 for Jakarta, $400 elsewhere). The housing allowance varies, depending on the number of accompanying dependents and location of the assignment. Round-trip international travel for the grantee on US flag carrier economy class only and for one accompanying dependent is also provided. The accompanying dependent must be present in Indonesia during the full grant period to qualify, due to complicated permit procedures. According to Indonesian immigration law only spouses with marriage certificates and children under 17 years old qualify as dependents.
AMINEF will reimburse scholars for dependents tuition up to a maximum of $5,000 per school-age child in grades K-12, for up to two children per family. In order to be reimbursed, receipts from the school(s) in Indonesia where the children are enrolled must be presented to AMINEF. This is a one-time reimbursement only. Any tuition above the one-time $5,000 allowance per dependent is the sole responsibility of the grantee.
A relocation allowance, excess baggage reimbursement, and one-time permit allowance will also be paid.
US Scholar grantees are encouraged to take advantage of a two-week intensive Indonesian language course in Indonesia during their grant period. AMINEF will assist in arranging this training and pay the training provider as well as transportation and accommodations if the training site is other than the grantee's teaching/research site.
